What truly makes us beautiful

All around the world today, people have a certain perceived idea of what the definition of beauty is. Our vision of beauty has been ultimately fogged by the enormous amount of media that fills our lives. Rules and preferences for how we should look are everywhere, and they do a great disservice to us.

Beauty has become something seemingly unachievable that almost stands on a pedestal as something so valued and desired by so many. Beauty has become less of the morale, resilience, compassion and overall love of a person, and instead it’s a competition of who can live up to society’s standards and expectation of what beauty is perceived to be.

What people fail to see is that beauty is much more than an aesthetic. It is much more than what the media portrays us to believe. Society has literally brainwashed so many of us into thinking that how we look, and also how much we weigh, is more important that who we are on the inside.

Unfortunately some of us spend every second of our lives oblivious to how we may feel. We may be unhappy with our life because we are too focused on keeping our aesthetics up to society’s ridiculous standards. Why must we feel so ashamed about our bodies? Why must we hate our stretch marks, lines, curves, freckles, body hair, etc? Why must we feel that we have to change our bodies in order to be happier? And why are we always worried about how we look like?

You know what makes us beautiful? First of all, our imperfections, our differences. Beauty is different for each and every one of us. Did you know that there is not a single seashell that is the same? Yet to us, all of them are beautiful in their own way.

And each of us are beautiful in ways that cannot be reflected in the mirror. Our smile makes us beautiful. Our laugh makes us beautiful. Our kindness and empathy makes us beautiful. Our confidence, our perseverance, our humbleness, all make us beautiful.

It’s beyond time for society to wake up and see what the true definition of beauty is. It’s the qualities, passions, and habits we nurture that what actually makes us beautiful—and there is something beautiful in everyone.

Here are some things that make us beautiful:

  • When we find strength in a challenging moment. It’s not easy to do, and you deserve credit for it.

  • When we create positive energy around us by thinking positive thoughts and acting with positive intentions.

  • When we share our struggles, putting our ego aside, to make someone else feel less alone.

  • When we are there for someone who needs us even if there’s nothing in it for us—give without expectations.

  • When we keep an open mind instead of sticking with a judgment or assumption.

  • When we show humility when our accomplishments would make it easy to stand above people.

  • When we honor the values that matter to us. Showing integrity is the first step to feeling good about yourself.

“Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.”
